The past few weeks have been really rough for me. I feel swamped at school and home, and I I am in the middle of some mini crisis issues at work and in my personal life; a lot to deal with all at once. When confronted with all of this my first reaction is to withdraw and hide away. When I can't do that...I cry. So- here is my interpretation for the prompt at OSI this week which is reincarnation. Please stop over at OSI and view other talented poets' work.

the tears in my soul

reincarnated as tears

cleanse my worried heart

This too shall pass, but as always, thank you so much to my friends in the Blogworld and Realworld for the kind comments and support. You are all awesome and very much appreciated!

Departed

"Departed" is the prompt over at OSI this week. Due to my brain being constantly overloaded, this haiku for the prompt seemed very apropos. I also included a reprint of a famous Chicago cartoon and little story that has "departed" and is no longer published.
Fading memory...
It isn't what it once was
Now what was this prompt?
As we start November and Autumn hits her stride, the weather often becomes really mild, luring us all back outside for one more breath of summer before we nest in our home until spring. Here in Chicago, we have been enjoying our annual Indian Summer for the last few days. Windows have been thrown open, shorts dug out, and many have spent their weekend outside soaking up the glorious weather.
Growing up, I distinctly remember the fun we had raking the leaves, jumping into them and the wonderfully autumnal smell of them being burned. Now different communities have outlawed the burning of leaves and with it, the perpetual haze that hung above the towns until the first snowfall. Although, I now succumb to headaches when leaves are burned in close proximity, it still is a distinctive smell I associate with fall. (Ironically, leaves can still be burned in the community where I teach and you can smell it on the outskirts of town)
On the Sunday before Halloween, the Chicago Tribune always ran Injun Summer by John T. McCutcheon on the front cover of their Magazine section. Before long, many other newspapers around the company ran Injun Summer as well. My grandparents and parents read Injun Summer to me when I was little, and I anxiously looked forward to its annual appearance. What started out in Chicago in 1907, soon became widespread across the US as this cartoon and story grew in popularity. I even still have a copy of this from the early 1070's that I have saved. On certain Autumn nights, especially one like tonight, when we have the windows open enjoying the Indian Summer and the waning moon, if I listen hard enough, I believe that I can hear the ancient war cries of the Indians who used to occupy this land.

INJUN SUMMER
John T. McCutcheon
Chicago TribuneSeptember 30, 1907

"Yep, sonny this is sure enough Injun summer. Don't know what that is, I reckon, do you? Well, that's when all the homesick Injuns come back to play; You know, a long time ago, long afore yer granddaddy was born even, there used to be heaps of Injuns around here—thousands—millions, I reckon, far as that's concerned. Reg'lar sure 'nough Injuns—none o' yer cigar store Injuns, not much. They wuz all around here—right here where you're standin'.
Don't be skeered—hain't none around here now, leastways no live ones. They been gone this many a year.
They all went away and died, so they ain't no more left.
But every year, 'long about now, they all come back, leastways their sperrits do. They're here now. You can see 'em off across the fields. Look real hard. See that kind o' hazy misty look out yonder? Well, them's Injuns—Injun sperrits marchin' along an' dancin' in the sunlight. That's what makes that kind o' haze that's everywhere—it's jest the sperrits of the Injuns all come back. They're all around us now.
See off yonder; see them tepees? They kind o' look like corn shocks from here, but them's Injun tents, sure as you're a foot high. See 'em now? Sure, I knowed you could. Smell that smoky sort o' smell in the air? That's the campfires a-burnin' and their pipes a-goin'.
Lots o' people say it's just leaves burnin', but it ain't. It's the campfires, an' th' Injuns are hoppin' 'round 'em t'beat the old Harry.
You jest come out here tonight when the moon is hangin' over the hill off yonder an' the harvest fields is all swimmin' in the moonlight, an' you can see the Injuns and the tepees jest as plain as kin be. You can, eh? I knowed you would after a little while.
Jever notice how the leaves turn red 'bout this time o' year? That's jest another sign o' redskins. That's when an old Injun sperrit gits tired dancin' an' goes up an' squats on a leaf t'rest. Why I kin hear 'em rustlin' an' whisper in' an' creepin' 'round among the leaves all the time; an' ever' once'n a while a leaf gives way under some fat old Injun ghost and comes floatin' down to the ground. See—here's one now. See how red it is? That's the war paint rubbed off'n an Injun ghost, sure's you're born.
Purty soon all the Injuns'll go marchin' away agin, back to the happy huntin' ground, but next year you'll see 'em troopin' back—th' sky jest hazy with 'em and their campfires smolderin' away jest like they are now."

An Award!!!

Recently, I was honored by Denise over at Polka Dot Moon when she nominated me for an award! Please check out her awesome blog and etsy shops, as she is a talented jewelry maker and papercrafter. Thanks Denise for this award!

Here are the rules:
1. Thank the person who nominated you for this award.
2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
3. Link to the person who nominated you for this award.
4. Name 7 things about yourself that people may not know.
5. Nominate Kreativ Bloggers.
6. Post links to the blogs you nominate.
7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs letting them know they’ve been nominated

Here are the 7 things people may not know about me... ( I found this to be really hard as through my poetry and posts, I share a lot...)

1. I am really shy! It is really hard for me to be in a large group of people- even those that I know. I get really quiet and at times almost seem to withdraw. I hate it but that's been my pattern my whole life , as well as self esteem issues.

2. I would love to live in a small rural community. Something about a small town where everyone knows each other just really appeals to me. That has always been a dream for me, but I really don't see that happening any time soon as I do not plan to retire in the near future (probably ever-ugh!). Oh well- Chicago suburbia for me for the time being...

3. I am a huge Donny Osmond fan (since I was like 8 years old). I have talked to him on the phone (during a Chicago PBS telethon), met him in person (at a meet and greet in Indianapolis) and have seen him in concert more times than I can count and remember, as well as seen him in Joseph (when he was in Chicago) 3 times- including opening night, and on his birthday. Yea Baby!!!

4. The one time I "caused" an accident was when I rear ended a police car. Talk about one of those awful moments when you know what's going to happen and you can't stop it. Not one of my better moments (and it really wasn't ALL my fault... on a hill, black ice and I couldn't stop in time). Since Molly is in Driver's Ed at the moment, this story is pretty timely, I would say.

5. I have horrible feet issues- so bad that the podiatrist gathered every employee in his office to look at my x-rays because they probably would never see a case like this again (lovely). These issues have caused me to fire off a nasty e-mail to Oprah after one of her shows about people who wear nice clothes and then "Schlumpadinka shoes"- which is me because I can't wear the cute shoes I want to because of the incredible pain involved, so I always have to choose comfort over fashion- ugh!

6. I am fascinated by the supernatural. Yup I am. I am even attending a seance this Sat. night with 12 of my closest friends. It should be interesting and yes, a little scary. But I love the feeling that this life is not all there is...so many possibilities...

7. I am addicted to flavored creamers (with a little coffee thrown in for good measure). I just started drinking coffee about 2 years ago and totally have gotten into mixing the flavors of the coffee with the creamers and can't imagine how I could have lived without them all. My current favorite is Trader Joe's Gingerbread coffee with fat free Vanilla Caramel creamer. Delicious!

So that's 7 things you probably didn't know- ok it wasn't as hard as it seemed and I could probably add some more but the rules only say 7, so maybe I will re-nominate myself at a later date and tell some more (haha).
I never know who likes the awards, so I am extending this award to any of YOU who would like to participate- so consider yourselves all Officially Nominated; ALL of you are deserving of this award in my book!

Happy Halloween to everyone!
This is my favorite holiday being that it is in fall, with all the colors and psychic possibilities... This year is perfect in that there is almost a full moon and daylight savings "falling back" happens tonight too. This week's OSI prompt is Shift in Time. I am a day early in doing this post, but the following poems were taken straight out of a journal from a few years ago. I think the first one especially captures my interpretation of a "shift in time." Join the other talented poets to see their interpretations of this prompt.

I wish that I could,
One more time,~
Be dressed up

in the costume of my dreams
And run,
dodging the leaves

raining down
and
skittering across the street~

Wild with abandon
from house to house ~
My biggest dilemma being…
Did I get something good in my treat bag?

^^^^^^^^^^^^
Darkness falls
As the Night creeps in
and with it
a bevy of trick or treaters
their flashlights bobbing
as they run from house to house

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Leaves rustle
wind howls
A child’s shriek
The moon glows
Another Hallow’s Eve

^^^^^^^^^^^^
Can you believe~
A full moon on Halloween?
I can almost picture...
A witch riding high,
her cat perched on her broom-
shrieking and cackling.~
off into the night ...

Halloween breakfast; I am sensing a theme....

Mike has a helper to carve his pumpkin!

"Little Punkin" at 14 months and then "Little Punkin" at 15 years trying on this year's Halloween costume!

The above pictures were of the sky last night. After many wet, gray, rainy days, for about 10 minutes the sky was absolutely gorgeous; almost like an artist painted it!

Spooktacular!

elusive sightings
spirits playing hide and seek
is the joke on us?

We live about 20 minutes from Bachelor's Grove (click to find out more...if you dare!); one of the most haunted cemeteries in Illinois as well as allegedly in the US. About a month and a half ago, Mike and I went out taking pictures really early in the morning and ended up sneaking into Bachelor's Grove. It is about a quarter mile walk through the woods until you finally reach the cemetery, which is pretty desolate and isolated; creating quite an eerie environment. There is much legend and myth surrounding this place from people seeing orbs, lights, a disappearing house, as well as a phantom car. It is definitely high on the creepy scale! Below are some pictures that I took from that morning.

This week's prompt at OSI is "elusive." Please stop by and visit other talented poets' interpretations of this prompt.

Today (Sat.), in the Spirit of Halloween, I am off to my friend Nancy's house for her annual Ghoulfriend Get Together. About 20 of us from school get together around the early afternoon and do Halloween-type things all day into the evening, sleep over and then watch spooky movies most of the day Sunday. It has really become a looked forward to tradition by all involved! We used to journey to Indiana to Nancy' Lake House, but now instead, go to her home. All kinds of activities are planned- last year was a jumpy house, relays, scavenger hunts, games, and just sitting around talking- which of course none of us object to. Everyone brings food and drink to share and it just is so much fun! Nancy's backyard backs up to a forest preserve and path so I am sure that will be incorporated into the activities somehow. She has booked a psychic to come around 6:00 tonight for anyone who wants a reading, and the night most definately will end with the annual campfire and spooky stories! Fun Fun Fun!!!

Do you have any Halloween traditions that you do?

Abundantly Simple

What week!!! Some may call my last few days busy, but I am preferring to call it "abundant" (that's for you Relyn). Let me explain~~~~ It all started Saturday morning. A typical fall weekend usually includes a soccer game in the Chicago area. I usually don't pay much attention to where we are going unless I know there are cute shops nearby since I am not the driver. Sat. morning bright and early Mike let me know the soccer game du jour was to be in Wheaton. Wheaton is where Angelica (from I'm Going Back to the Start) lives. She and I have written back and forth for over a year and I have always wanted to meet her. I left her a message on Facebook that were would be in the area and what park we would be at. the time, and my cell number (minus the area code just to make it more challenging for her-lol). Long story short...she called- and we got to meet!!! It was so cool! It truly was like meeting a long lost friend. She is so sweet and bubbly and friendly. She brought her husband (who spent the time talking with Mike about soccer which Mike loved) and 2 adorable boys, as they were on their way to soccer games as well. I swear, we could have talked for hours...I can't wait to meet up with her again!

From the soccer game, Mike and I met up with his sister and our nephews (they were playing football in Wheaton too- that was quite the place to be on Sat.), and Mike's parents and we were able to spend a lovely lunch with them.

Sunday, I passed on the soccer game du jour and instead drove up to Schaumberg to meet up with some college friends for one of our 3 and 1/2 hour marathon lunches. Lots of giggling and laughing- loved it! Before I went out to lunch though, Mike and I spent the morning out taking pictures in a little town nearby called Crete; it has all kinds of great places to capture (see above pictures).

Monday after school I met up with a friend who retired from teaching last year to have dinner (have you figured out the theme in these get-togethers yet?). I hadn't seen her since the summer, so it was nice catching up with her and she with me as my 7th graders all had her last year and I had some great stories.

Last night found me in Lemont with Laura (Maude and Mozart) and Karin (a stitching expat life)as we supped at Taco Bell before we went over to Inspired Needle- the local cross stitch shop for their bi-monthly stitch night. Lots of good conversation as we stitched.

Tonight I am just getting home because I went out after school with a bunch of friends to see the movie Paranormal Activity- no dinner involved but there was some yummy popcorn...

In the middle of all of this, I have joined a new swap from Linda over at A Swap for All Seasons. This one is an altered Christmas cabinet card. I have never done anything like this so it will be interesting but fun. My swap partner is Kelly (Keke) over at the Cherry Kingdom. I am looking forward to getting to know her. Her blog is very cool- if you have time, please stop by!

I also received a beautiful fall bracelet and earrings from Denise over at Polka Dot Moon. Her etsy shop always has the cutest things and I love ordering from her.

To top it ALL off ....Donny and his 2 10's on DWTS!!! Yea Baby!!! What a Tango... What a guy... I feel like I am 11 again!

So- yes I feel like my simple life has been full of abundance; especially blogosphere connections, and I have enjoyed every bit of it!!!

Oh October!

October ~
You magical, mystical month
You are anxiously awaited and anticipated
As you deliciously descend divinely
to cloak our world in a kaleidoscope of colors
You wrap us in your reds, golds, and oranges
drenching us in your dew-kissed dreams ~
fancifully frolicking freely
in all you have to offer us
Quietly you quickly lift
your thin, transparent, translucent veil
between us and those who have gone before
to present psychic possibilities
for us to compose and conquer questions
and grasp and grapple for a glimpse
of the supernaturally silent (un)seen
before you surreptitiously softly slip away
leaving us yearning for your yesterdays ...
